The Blanket
This blanket has been in our family;
For quite a number of years.
It's filled with many moments of laughter;
And many memories, with tears.
It covered the bed where grandma laid.
And told us stories every night;
It kept her warm and comfortable;
Until she finally lost her fight.
One night in spring, baby brother came;
I remember the night he was born.
The blanket covered Mama then;
And it kept them safe, and warm.
The blanket was a tent sometimes;
And we used to play for hours.
Brother put it around his neck;
And became Superman with powers!
Of course it was laid across the grass;
As picnics were held in the yard.
If rain came down from the skies above;
It then became, our bodyguard.
It went on numerous trips with us;
In was always put in the car.
I laid upon it, in the back seat.
And gazed out, at the evening star.
The kitty would always use it too;
It was his favorite choice for a bed.
He curled up so very quietly;
And tucked away his little head.
Many nights, it was my safe place;
As I hid from the thunders roar.
I would pull it way up, over my head;
And then, I wasn't afraid anymore.
This blanket has been through a lot with us;
And is filled with memories from the past.
Now, it's going into my cedar chest to stay;
Where it will be put to rest, at last.
