For My Son
I'll never forget the day you were born;
And you were laid upon my chest.
There were other babies there;
But, of course, you were the best.
I took you home and nurtured you;
And watched your tiny body grow.
And then when you were two years old;
I was dealt the heart-felt blow!
"Your son is deaf" they told me;
There is nothing to be done.
It was then I knew, within my heart;
I was blessed with a "special" son.
I took you home and cried all night;
Wondering what I could do.
Then the thought was clear to me;
I would learn to talk to you.
Your Father didn't care for you;
After he learned that you were deaf.
Maybe that's why in years to come;
He packed up and he left.
I enrolled in night school;
Determined that I would sign.
Becasue you were my "special" child;
And now completely mine!
Now you are a "special" young man;
For all the world to see.
I brought you up with love in your heart;
Love given unconditionally!
